So you’ve thought long and hard about it and you’ve decided that you want to get a tattoo. You’ve picked out the perfect phrase, image or quote. You’ve selected the font and how you want it to look. It’s something meaningful and motivational. Something you know you will be happy with for the rest of your life. But now you find yourself asking, where should I get a tattoo if I work and want to hide it? What are the best tattoo locations for working women?

It’s a question A LOT of professional women are asking. 47% of millennials have at least one tattoo compared to 36% of Generation X and 13% of Baby Boomers. When choosing to get a tattoo, 70% of those millennials are choosing places that can be easily covered up for work.

What is the best tattoo placement for working women?

You want a location that is easily concealed and placement that is attractive and feminine. You also don’t want a spot where skin isn’t going to sag too much over time or in a place that will stretch a lot during pregnancy. Here are the best tattoo locations for working women.

Behind Your Ear Tattoo

If you have a small symbol, date or single word in mind and you have (and plan on having) long hair, then a tattoo behind the ear may be a good option. Be honest with yourself about whether you wear your hair up or down at work. If you wear it up most of the time or (if you’re like me) it goes up halfway through the day, then this may not be the best location for you. It depends on how large and noticeable your tattoo is going to be.
If your tattoo is mean’t to be motivational then you won’t see it here. But there are plenty of small tattoos that would work well in this location.

Outer Collar Bone Tattoo

I think tattoos on the collar bone are some of the most elegant on women. The trick is keeping it covered. If you really love this location and have a small tattoo, I would push it to your outer collarbone so that it would sit under a tank top strap and out of view if you were wearing a v-neck.

Wrist Tattoo

If you wear a watch or bracelets consistently, this is a great location that is going to be concealed most of the time. A tattoo on the wrist should still be pretty small (are you picking up on a pattern here?) The location is low on the pain scale and is a great spot for something motivational that you want to see everyday. You can place on the inner wrist or on the outer wrist depending on the tattoo’s size and whether it is an image or word.

Underboob Tattoo

Ahhh the underboob tattoo. I don’t really know what to call this area but allegedly his is what tattoos here are called. All I know is that Rihanna ROCKS an underboob tattoo.

Luckily, any tattoo in this location shouldn’t be visible at work (or at least it shouldn’t be!). So you can go bananas with a larger piece if you wanted. However, it is going to be pretty painful to get done and you are going to be up close and personal with your tattoo artist.

Side of your Finger Tattoo

I’m not a huge fan of the between your fingers tattoo unless it is a TINY tattoo. A very small heart or symbol that nobody knows is there. A small symbol with fine lines would work well.

Rib Tattoo

This one’s probably going to hurt. But it’s the perfect spot to have a larger tattoo that you can easily hide. In my opinion, this is probably one of the best places for women to get tattoos. The skin won’t stretch too much and its out of sight from anyone who you don’t want to see it.

Ankle Tattoo

I tattoos behind the ankle (not on the ankle bone!) are some of the least painful. If you position it right, most heels and flats will cover the design for work. It’s another great place for a small simple design.

Back or Back of the Shoulder Tattoo

This feels like it was Generation X’s go to and probably for good reason. It is a safe bet. Unless you can and do wear a tank top to work, this tattoo is going to be easy to cover up unless it is oversized. The only catch for me is that the placement doesn’t come off as very feminine in many cases but that depends on your ink. But it’s probably one of the best tattoo locations for working women.

Inner Bicep Tattoo

While this part of the arm would be easier to hide in an office environment, it is going to be less forgiving long term. Your bicep may sag more with time (aka wings) so if you are worried about the long-term look of this tattoo, skip it. You are also still going to have to wear longer sleeves at work at all times. Forever. So choose wisely.

Spine Tattoo

When done right, a spine tattoo can be beautiful. Since its right on the spine, it’s probably going to be pretty painful to get. But it can be a very delicate and feminine choice for the right tattoo.  As long as you don’t bring the tattoo too high,  it will cover easily for work.

Inner Arm Tattoo, Below the Elbow

I think this is a gorgeous spot for a tattoo on a woman but I don’t know that I personally could ever pull the trigger on it. Wearing long sleeves all the time would be tough. This location isn’t going to sag as much over time like the inner bicep.

These are in my opinion, some of the best tattoo locations for working women. The answer is yes – you can be a professional, working woman and have a tattoo (or many). You just have to be selective about where you decide to put them. Take a little bit of time to think through the best placement for your career and your lifestyle. You’ll end up with a tattoo you love long term.
